Why is crafting for weapons, ammo, or armor locked?

If you see a lock icon on a crafting recipe, it means the blueprint has not been learned yet.
Most advanced items - including firearms, ammunition, metal armor, and explosives - require you to first research their blueprint at a Workbench.
To unlock a recipe, approach your Workbench, find the item in the tech tree, and spend the required amount of Scrap.
Once a blueprint is learned, it is permanently added to your Craft Menu on that server.
